A little about me: my name is Alyssa Wolff. I earned my BA in English from Campbell University in 2020, amid all the chaos of COVID. Graduating and entering the workforce in a pandemic made it extra challenging to find steady work. I got my first job as a freelance editor for a local author, doing the content editing on her novel, and I loved it! The author was happy with the work I did and started recommending me to friends of hers who needed editors. I saw that I was good at this. I had a shot at turning this into a business!

An important lesson I learned in my first editing job is that the editor needs to work with the writer. I find that it makes a positive difference to listen to the writer’s opinions about the changes that I make. For example, say I am doing the copyediting on your novel, and I take out a sentence that seems unnecessary. When you review the changes, you tell me what you were trying to convey there. Then, instead of just taking the sentence out, I can edit it to make your intentions clearer to the reader. It’s your creation, you have a vision for it, and I will listen to what that vision is.
